In an effort to monitor his progress, I am going to start taking monthly confirmation pictures. I am stealing this from Emma and I regret not starting it back when I first started bringing him back. Oh well, you live and you learn. I think he looks a little goofy when he is just standing, but I love his movement.

Conclusion of Stinker Drama
The vet came out and checked Stinker out. He said that Stinker looked the best he had seen him (remember the vet really hadn't seen him pre EPM)...well I felt silly. The vet did say Stinker is weak in his stifles and a little sore in his hocks. I am going to keep working him and get him out on the hills more and hopefully get the hind built back up. The vet will be back in a couple weeks and he will recheck his hocks. Depending on how that goes Stinker may get his hocks injected.

dont feel silly! You are starting now and will have a great baseline now you have a strengthening regime in place!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to see lots of changes. We have a long way to go, but you have to start somewhere.
DeleteMy TB needed hock injections to handle 3rd level. He ended up needing hock surgery to save his soundness (unrelated to the injections or why we gave them), and I put him on Doc's OCD pellets to help his bone heal... I don't have the xrays to prove it since his untimely passing in August, but I believe I would not have needed to inject him again. The surgeon did an incredible job fixing him, but she couldn't guarantee he'd be competition sound. His hocks (both of them, not just the repaired one), felt better than ever when he died. I'd look into the pellets before injecting, only because he's so young (right? he's under 5 or 6 years old?) and the pellets for a year are cheaper than the injections.
ReplyDeleteI read the whole Mikey story. I will look into the supplement. I have him on a different joint supplement, but I'm willing to try something different because he is going to be 7 this year and has only been under saddle for a year (excluding whatever was done to him as a two year old).
DeleteCool! What is he on now? I've done Adequan, Cosequin (hand mixing my own MSM and HA into it), SmartFlex Resilience III (I think that was it's name), and Doc's OCD. Doc's was the most cost effective I think (aside from the 10 dose Adequan) and I noticed a difference the most on it. Doc's does a free 60 day supply with your first order. He's just so young (and not long under saddle!!) to go right to injecting the hock... I've heard it's a once you go there, you don't stop type thing? If you do order it, let me know how he feels on it! Though I'm sure I'll read about it!
DeleteThe smart flex III. I was doing adequan but he had a bad reaction and I'm nervous to try again and see if it was bad luck or actually due to the injection.
DeleteThe vet seemed to think that injections to get him through the EPM period did not mean a lifetime of injections. But he also didn't say he wouldn't ever need them again. I will keep you updated.
glad there's nothing more serious going on! i need to start doing the confo pics again too (which i actually stole the idea from Carly haha - gotta love the blogosphere)... i stopped bc i kept forgetting, then got pretty embarrassed about my horse's shitty ass top line despite so much work and effort. but we're trying to fix it now, so might as well start documenting again... maybe. haha.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Just compare Iz to Stinker...with his upside down neck and total lack of topline she will look good :)
DeleteI was hesitant to post them but I figured why not. I need them for myself and I basically write this for me and if other people read it awesome.
very good points, and i totally agree. le sigh. back to monthly confo shots i guess (if i can ever remember)...
