Little Things

Right now my rides are pretty boring, because we are working on the same things every single day.  So sometimes you have to take a moment and appreciate the little things in life.  This weekend, it was the fact that I opened and closed a gate without getting off Stinker.

We won't be winning any trail classes with our skills, but I am quite proud of the fact that my horse moves off my leg well enough and doesn't get freaked out by me leaning off to the side to open and close a gate.  Sure the standing while latching/unlatching was a struggle, but standing in general is a struggle.  And yes he was a pain in the butt and turned and shoved the gate back open while I was trying to reach for the chain to latch it.  Yep, my horse is an ass because I swear he grinned after he did it.

    1. It also is helpful when your horse isn't trying to open the gate when you are trying to latch it 😂

  3. Haha, that is a big thing to be able to do it, even if it took a while!

    1. I was really pleased. I figured that I would be able to get it open but not closed.

  4. Ugh i'm jealous of your gate opening. we haven't exactly mastered enough "please move sideways" to do the gate without bumping into it and causing a havoc.

    1. We have always had the move sideways. It has just gotten a bit more controllable lately. But I totally get what you mean. I've had numerous horses shoot sideways because the gate is going to eat them 🙄

  5. I'm a big fan of basic skills like opening gates and standing on a loose rein. :-) That's one of the best things that came out of my early days with C.

    1. That loose rein thing is still a work in progress. Actually just standing is a work in progress...

  6. Gate opening is such a real and useful skill!! Isabel was master of some gates and completely terrible at others lol. Charlie has only faced on so far... And not particularly successfully lol

    1. I had a mare I could open barb wire gates off of but a solid gate was a solid nope. I'm super lazy so I love being able to open and close gates off of horses.
