The possibility of him having an EPM relapse is a real concern. The face my vet pulled when I told him was not confidence boosting. Stinker is going to have to be hauled nearly 3,000 miles which is less than ideal. His boarding situation is going to change, which is another stressor for him. We are working on a plan to lessen the risk, but it is stressful at best.

If anyone has tips for a long distance move I would love to hear them. While I have moved multiple states three times now, this will be the first time with a horse in tow. I am currently working on some other posts about this whole process, but I would greatly appreciate any and all input.
I've never moved long distance with a horse in tow so I'm no help. But I can't wait to hear about your adventures in moving.

DeleteI know you and I talked about this before, but I'm still all for you finding a driving buddy and driving him yourself, only because of his history and that way you have complete control over his situation. Good luck in your planning!

ReplyDeleteI am a big believer in professional shipping companies, particularly using brook ledge. It'll be pricey, but WORTH it.
I am ok with pricey. If I can avoid the EPM relapse paying more for shipping up front will be cheaper in the long run.

DeleteI only brought one horse (Carmen) long distance. I would pay for a box stall on the trailer and a few days break in between.

DeleteUndestandably scary. I have never done such a move, but if I did I would really consider someone like Brookledge who really know what they are doing. Box stalls, care, water and rest for the horses. Air ride vans.

DeleteDo it yourself or get one of the BIG companies. Don't mess around with mid-level. We did down our multi-state move (12 hour drive) ourselves b/c the shipper bailed a few days before. The first half of the international trip was handled flawless by IHT. Second half, ended up having to scramble when the no-name shipper threatened to wander all over several states in high summer.
